At least 13 people lose their lives and ninety-eight injured in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” declared the head of state.

The official reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the year before. This project was a hallmark of his administration's economic vision for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated rate, beating forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised ongoing concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent pause in the development and management of all such projects.

This pause was requested while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."

In reply, the president asserted that the train had been operating in full compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these strategic projects.
