Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for hours when multiple of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations affecting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
Since January, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that such operations become not financially viable and present no risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Parallel situations in nearby states have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
